Calculating routes...
EV Route Planner was built by an EV owner who wanted to get the most out of every charge. Realizing that elevation plays a huge role in battery consumption, I set out to build a tool that factors in terrain — not just distance — when planning routes, helping you drive as efficiently as possible.
The idea is simple: two routes can be the same distance, but the one that climbs a mountain will drain your battery far more than the one that takes a gentler path. This app analyzes elevation profiles, calculates grade-aware energy consumption for your specific vehicle, and helps you pick the route that saves the most battery — so you can drive with confidence instead of worry.
This is a free community project, built for EV drivers by an EV driver. If you find it useful or have ideas to make it better, I'd love to hear from you.
Technology: Built with Google Maps Platform APIs including Maps JavaScript API, Places API, Directions API, and Elevation API. Vehicle efficiency data is based on publicly available EPA ratings and manufacturer specifications. Energy calculations use a grade-aware model that accounts for motor efficiency, regenerative braking, and terrain profile.
March 2026 — v2.0 Major Update
The iOS native app is now available! We've also brought many of its advanced features back to this web version.
What's New in v2.0
• Physics-based energy model — aerodynamic drag (Cd), rolling resistance (Crr), and grade forces per vehicle
• Settings panel — customize start charge, arrival reserve, charge target, electricity cost, units, and more
• Charging cost estimates — per-station pricing with total trip cost
• DC fast charging curve — realistic charge times based on SOC brackets (0-50%: full power, 50-80%: 60%, 80-100%: 30%)
• Battery % overlay on elevation chart showing discharge curve and charge stops
• Charging timeline — visual timeline showing battery state at each stop
• Per-section efficiency breakdown for multi-stop routes
• PDF export — downloadable route summary report
• Round trip mode with independently optimized outbound and return routes
• GPS location detection for instant origin setup
• Google Maps, Apple Maps, and Waze navigation integration
• 25+ EV models with full physics parameters
